Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming an increasingly significant risk to global health, and this concern is being actively addressed within the country. Since 2015, the National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee has been organizing World AMR Awareness Week to raise awareness about this critical issue.

This year’s World AMR Awareness Week commenced on November 18 and will continue until November 24. The week emphasizes the necessity of awareness, proper hygiene practices, and vaccination — drawing valuable lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the launch of AMR Week in Labasa, Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, Chief Medical Advisor at the Health Ministry, underscored that AMR poses a substantial threat not only to the progress achieved in modern medicine but also jeopardizes lives in the present. She pointed out Fiji’s proactive stance through the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which is currently in its second edition. This plan sets forth vital goals and promotes collaboration across various health sectors.

Dr. Cikamatana urged the public to adhere to the guidance of healthcare professionals regarding antibiotic usage, stressing the importance of not sharing prescriptions or unnecessarily requesting antibiotics. She also called for unified efforts across all sectors—human, animal, and environmental health—to combat AMR and safeguard both local and global health.

Through education, advocacy, and decisive action, Fiji stands poised to contribute to a healthier future for everyone.

In summary, AMR is a societal concern that requires collective action. With continued awareness and proactive measures, there is hope for effective management against the spread of antimicrobial resistance. The commitment shown by leaders like Dr. Cikamatana and the National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee sets a positive example for other nations facing similar challenges.
