Fiji’s baseball team is channeling its efforts into preparing for the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau, marking a significant moment in the country’s sporting journey. Since their inception into baseball in May 2000, spurred by the Baseball Confederation of Oceania, the Fiji Islands Baseball Association has been instrumental in fostering the sport, particularly through the establishment of grassroots programs aimed at developing young talent.

The national squad, comprising a mix of seasoned players and emerging talents, is currently under the guidance of coach Ken Tamaki, a dedicated JICA volunteer who has been working with the team for over 20 months. Tamaki’s coaching has focused on improving players’ physical fitness and fundamental baseball skills, even amid challenges such as limited training equipment. A noteworthy aspect of the team is the involvement of the Sorovakatini family, where former national captain Tavo Sorovakatini plays alongside his sons, Murphy and Marnoah, creating a unique dynamic within the team.

Fiji’s baseball story is enriched by the commitment of youth, highlighted by 17-year-old William Michael Johns, whose inspiration to join the sport came from his late uncle, a former player representing Fiji. This diversity in experience and youth underscores the growth potential within the sport. The past successes of the under-15 development side, which won a medal at the 2019 Oceania Qualification event, indicate a promising foundation for future competitions.

Moreover, the team’s preparation is underscored by a strong community spirit, bolstered by support from various organizations. This collective effort reflects a growing engagement with sports in Fiji, with hopes of elevating baseball’s profile on both local and international platforms. As they approach the Mini Games, the Fiji baseball team is not only aiming for a podium finish but also fostering a deeper interest in the sport among the youth — a sign of the sport’s promising trajectory in the region.

With training intensifying as the departure date of June 27 approaches, there is a shared optimism that the lessons learned and dedication displayed will translate into success at the Pacific Mini Games, setting the stage for a brighter future for baseball in Fiji.
