He has outlined plans to bring together a squad of 16 players, all working adults ranging in age from 17 to 48. “Our primary focus is on enhancing their physical fitness and baseball skills ahead of the competition,” Tamaki mentioned. Unlike other sports in Fiji, baseball does not have a domestic qualification system; hence, the selection of players relies on a specific process involving trials, which were last conducted in October.
Tamaki faces several hurdles, notably a lack of training equipment such as a pitching machine. “We need to find ways to train despite these limitations,” he stated, but remains optimistic about the team’s potential. His enthusiasm shines through as he showcases a belief in the natural abilities of Fijians, stating, “Baseball is popular in North and Latin America and Asia, but it suits the natural abilities of Fijians.”
