Fiji’s Backline Set to Unleash Against France in Autumn Nations Series

Fiji fly-half Caleb Muntz has expressed his eagerness to showcase his formidable backline during their upcoming match against France in the Autumn Nations Series. The 26-year-old playmaker will partner with an impressive roster, including Racing 92 centre Josua Tuisova, Bristol midfielder Kalaveti Ravouvou, and Lyon winger Jiuta Wainiqolo, all known for their ability to generate scoring opportunities from seemingly impossible situations.

Muntz emphasized the collective strength of their backline, stating, “With all the weapons that we have in our backline, it’s very important that I’m kind of the one just to unleash them.” He noted the blessing of not needing to shoulder the burden of making every game-changing play himself, allowing him to focus on setting his teammates up for success.

Originally hailing from New Zealand, Muntz qualifies for the Fijian national team through his grandparents. After developing his skills at Hamilton Boys’ School, he played six seasons with Fijian Drua before making a move to France this season, joining the ambitious second-tier club Provence. In just three appearances in the ProD2 league, Muntz has already scored 33 points, including a standout try during his debut.

His experience in the Fijian rugby system gives him valuable insights, which he intends to leverage in the international arena. “I can bring that into the team,” he remarked about adapting to the slower pace required in international play, especially when conditions become challenging.

Muntz will be facing off against France’s established fly-half, Romain Ntamack, a player he recognizes as world-class. Muntz reflected on the quality present in the French squad, highlighting the significance of players like Ntamack and Matthieu Jalibert in the context of international competition.

In this weekend’s match, Fiji will field a squad featuring several players based in France, including the powerhouse Tuisova and the agile Wainiqolo, alongside fellow professionals such as Selestino Ravutaumada and Pita Gus Sowakula. Notably, Bayonne centre Sireli Maqala, who has been in impressive form recently, will start on the bench.

Muntz described Maqala as “electric,” praising his speed, power, and exceptional vision, which leads to breakthroughs during matches. As Fiji prepares to take on France, they are motivated by previous encounters, looking to improve upon their historical record against Les Bleus.

This match represents not just an opportunity for Muntz and his teammates to shine, but also a chance for the Fijian team to enhance their reputation on the international stage and inspire young athletes back home. With their sights set on future competitions, including the upcoming 2027 Rugby World Cup, the Flying Fijians are positioned for growth and success as they continue their journey in elite rugby.
