The application period for the 2025 Back-to-School Support program is now officially underway. The Fijian Government aims to alleviate the financial burden on low-income families when it comes to educational costs. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the crucial role this financial assistance plays in ensuring that no child is deprived of educational opportunities due to financial constraints.

Professor Prasad stated, “We believe no child should miss out because of financial difficulties,” underscoring a commitment to ensure every child in Fiji begins the school year adequately equipped with essentials like uniforms, shoes, bags, lunch boxes, and stationery — all without incurring additional stress for parents regarding costs.

Since its inception three years ago, the program has provided an impressive $87 million in total support to families throughout Fiji. In the last budget allocation, $42.5 million was disbursed, benefiting 212,740 students under this program. For the 2024-2025 budget, $40 million is allocated to assist families with an annual income of $50,000 or less, extending support from Early Childhood Education (ECE) up through Year 13.

Prof Prasad pointed out that to simplify the application process, forms will be available at schools and online. Teachers and school leaders will play a vital role in verifying the application details, encouraging them to assist parents in completing and submitting their forms by the deadline. Notably, the Government will cover the service fee, ensuring that parents receive the full $200 benefit.

This initiative is a testament to the government’s dedication to providing every child in Fiji equal access to education, reinforcing the value placed on education for all. Payments to beneficiaries will be facilitated through Vodafone M-PAiSA and Digicel MyCASH, with Post Fiji ensuring that families in remote areas also receive assistance.

The application window is now open and will remain available until December 6, 2024.

In summary, this program represents a significant step towards ensuring that all children have the opportunity to receive an education without the burden of financial difficulties. With ongoing support, the A hopeful outlook exists for families as they navigate the schooling costs ahead.
