The Fijian Government has officially launched the application process for its 2025 Back-to-School Support program. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on low-income families, ensuring that all children have the necessary resources to start their school year fully prepared. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, reiterated the government’s dedication to this cause, stating, “No child should miss out because of financial difficulties.”

The program, now in its third year, has been instrumental in supporting families, having provided a substantial $87 million to date. In the previous budget alone, it distributed $42.5 million to aid 212,740 students. For the 2024-2025 financial year, the government has allocated an additional $40 million, which specifically targets families earning an annual income of $50,000 or less. This support spans from Early Childhood Education (ECE) through to Year 13.

Professor Prasad highlighted the government’s aim to streamline the application process, assuring families that forms can be accessed at schools and online. Assistance will also be available from teachers and school heads, who are encouraged to aid parents in completing and submitting their applications. Importantly, to ensure that families receive the full benefit of the program, the government will cover the service fees, allowing every eligible parent to receive the full $200 assistance.

With payments to be facilitated through Vodafone M-PAiSA and Digicel MyCASH, as well as Post Fiji for families in remote areas, the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to providing every child in Fiji with equal educational opportunities. Applications are currently open and will remain available until December 6, 2024.

This program not only aims to reduce financial strain but also promotes the value of education in building a prosperous future for Fiji’s youth. The initiative reflects a hopeful vision where every child can thrive academically, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
