For Akisi Bolakoro, being chosen for Fiji’s Baby Pearls team and competing in the Netball World Youth Cup represents the culmination of her unwavering dedication and perseverance. Since she first picked up netball at the tender age of eight, Bolakoro has steadily developed her skills through primary and high school, eventually joining the Baby Pearls academy two years ago.

At 19, Bolakoro acknowledges that her journey would not have been possible without the strong support system provided by her parents. “My biggest motivation was my parents. They always told me not to give up because we really fought hard and came a long way to where I am today,” she reflects. Bolakoro’s commitment has led her to become one of the select few who progressed through a competitive selection process to earn a spot on the Baby Pearls squad.

The team’s journey to the Netball World Youth Cup is not only about individual success but also a significant stride for Fijian netball on the world stage. The Baby Pearls will face Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and later Malawi, marking the start of their competitive fixtures.

The overarching narrative of the Baby Pearls goes beyond athletic competition. It highlights the importance of community support and the nurturing of young talent within Fiji, with notable contributions from local clubs such as the Grasshoppers, Lomaiviti, and Tagimoucia, which have played crucial roles in developing players who represent the national team.

The dedication to fostering skills and team cohesion is evident in their rigorous training sessions and participation in local and international tournaments under the guidance of head coach Simone Nalatu. Nalatu and her team have emphasized the importance of resilience and teamwork, ensuring the Baby Pearls are well-prepared to make an impact in the upcoming games.

As Bolakoro and her teammates take to the court, their efforts are not just about winning games but also setting an example for aspiring netball players in Fiji. Their journey symbolizes hope and commitment, serving as an inspiration for future generations. With the support of local organizations and a focus on long-term development, the future of netball in Fiji looks promising. The Baby Pearls are poised not only to compete but to elevate the profile of netball within their community and beyond.
