Fiji’s Baby Pearls under-21 netball team displayed commendable progress during the Ruby North Competition held in Townsville, Australia, where they secured two victories out of four matches. Head coach Simone Nalatu expressed her pride in the team’s development and the lessons they learned throughout the tournament.

The Baby Pearls’ wins came against the Far North Flames (48-34) and the FNAE Roos (37-31). Despite narrow losses to Mareton Bay City Pulse (43-41) and North Queensland United Development (49-45), the coach noted significant improvements in the players’ ability to maintain composure during tense moments in the games.

Nalatu highlighted that the tournament served as an opportunity not only to test the players but also to achieve specific team targets. She praised their performance at various points, urging her team to strive for consistency in future games. The competition provided vital exposure and experience as the Baby Pearls prepare for the upcoming 2025 Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar, with six players remaining in Australia for additional training with Sunshine Coast Thunder.

As the team returns home for a short break, they are set to regroup in two weeks for a selection camp and more competitive matches. The growth displayed at the Ruby North tournament reflects the increasing recognition of netball in Fiji and underscores a hopeful outlook for the sport’s future. By continuing to develop their skills and gain experience, the Baby Pearls are paving the way for future generations of Fijian athletes.
