The squad includes a diverse mix of locally based and overseas players who have demonstrated high levels of commitment in representing the national team.
Assistant Coach Vaiti Waqatabu is leading a core group of 15 players who have been consistently training together. The entire squad now looks forward to participating in rigorous cross-training camps and international tournaments to sharpen their skills for the global competition. Head Coach Simone Nalatu shared her enthusiasm for the squad, highlighting the blend of local talent and overseas experience.
“We are thrilled to have such a dedicated group of young athletes, from both within Fiji and abroad. Their commitment is a testament to the growth of netball talent in Fiji,” Nalatu stated. The team’s first major test will occur on April 8, starting with a five-day training camp. From this camp, a traveling 15-member squad will be selected to participate in the Ruby North Series from April 23 to 28, providing critical international match experience.
Netball Fiji also expressed gratitude to PacificAusSports for its unwavering support throughout the preparations for the NWYC and acknowledged sponsors and fans for their ongoing encouragement as the Baby Pearls aim for a strong showing in Gibraltar.
Historically, Fiji’s participation at the youth level has sent a message about the emerging talent within the sport, and this opportunity to compete on an international platform can further elevate the profile of netball in Fiji. As the Baby Pearls prepare for this exciting journey, there is optimism regarding their potential to inspire future generations of netball players.
The preparation for the World Youth Cup not only highlights the athletes’ dedication but also reflects Fiji’s growing prominence in the global netball community, suggesting a bright future for the sport in the region.
