Fiji’s Avocado Ambitions: Can New Zealand’s Success Model Spark Growth?

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica recently visited Zespri International during his time in New Zealand to study their successful cooperative model, according to the Ministry of Trade. Zespri is a thriving $2 billion industry and the world’s leading exporter of kiwifruit, noted for its innovative marketing strategies and strong brand presence.

The company operates as a private sector cooperative, enabling it to harness the collective capabilities of its growers while upholding high-quality standards and sustainable practices. Minister Kamikamica envisions a similar development for the avocado industry in Fiji.

Zespri has expressed its willingness to offer guidance and support, utilizing its extensive international market experience to assist Fiji in maximizing the potential of its agricultural sector. Although Fiji is rich in tropical fruits like avocados, papayas, and pineapples, these resources have not yet been fully commercialized.

To diversify Fiji’s economy, efforts are being made to implement similar cooperative models and establish robust industry frameworks that can enhance production, marketing, and export capabilities. DPM Kamikamica is currently on an official visit to New Zealand, where he is engaging with industry leaders to advance these objectives.
