The Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has officially returned the NASA compound to Fiji Airports Limited (FAL) after nearly four decades of military use. The handover took place on February 4, 2025, and signifies a key stage in FAL’s ambitious 20-year master plan aimed at expanding airport facilities in the country.

The NASA bar, as the compound is popularly known, served not only as a military facility since 1987 but also as a recreational venue for local communities. The return of the compound is seen as a major milestone in the history of Namaka, Nadi, according to a statement from the RFMF. This transition is expected to honor the compound’s legacy while facilitating future development that aligns with FAL’s strategic objectives.

The RFMF expressed optimism about the future of the compound, stating that as it starts to undergo reconfiguration, it will continue to benefit the people of Fiji by fostering growth and creating opportunities in the upcoming years.

This transfer aligns with broader developments within Fiji Airports as it gears up for an ambitious decade ahead, which includes the implementation of 18 significant projects to enhance both Nadi and Nausori Airports. Recently, Fiji Airports has partnered with COX Architecture Pty Ltd to develop a comprehensive landslide master plan for these airports, demonstrating its commitment to improving aviation infrastructure.

These proactive initiatives represent a promising future for Fiji’s aviation sector, suggesting that the nation is on track to enhance its travel experiences and economic potential through improved airport facilities and expanded operations. As Fiji looks forward to these ongoing developments, the commitment to modernization in its aviation sector indicates a hopeful trajectory aimed at boosting tourism and connectivity in the region.

In summary, the return of the NASA compound is not just a historical event but part of a larger vision for growth within Fiji’s airport infrastructure, signaling an era of exciting developments for the aviation and tourism industries.
