Fiji is taking significant steps toward enhancing the sustainability of its aviation sector by exploring new technologies like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and improving energy efficiency at its airports. Salaseini Daunbuna, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, made this announcement during her address at the Third Regional Aviation Ministers Meeting in Suva. Recognizing the pressing environmental challenges posed by climate change, Ms. Daunbuna emphasized Fiji’s commitment to adopting sustainable practices across all sectors, particularly aviation.
Fiji supports the International Civil Aviation Organization’s carbon offsetting and reduction scheme for international aviation (CORSIA) and is dedicated to reducing emissions within its aviation sector. She called for regional collaboration to enable small island developing states like Fiji to engage fully in global sustainability initiatives.
As a key regional hub, Fiji aims to improve air connectivity among Pacific island states and the wider world, which is essential for fostering economic growth and tourism. Ms. Daunbuna highlighted the necessity of developing a regional aviation strategy that promotes seamless passenger and goods movement, ensuring a more integrated and accessible Pacific region.
Moreover, Fiji is committed to investing in digital infrastructure, including the integration of e-gates and digital passenger processing systems, which are expected to enhance operational efficiency. This collaborative approach with regional partners aims to secure long-term success, safety, and growth for Fiji’s aviation sector amid future global challenges.
This initiative reflects a positive outlook for Fiji’s aviation industry, showcasing the nation’s proactive stance in contributing to global sustainability while reinforcing its position as a leader in the Pacific. With dedicated efforts toward energy efficiency and international collaboration, Fiji’s commitment could serve as a model for other nations in the region.
