Ian Simpson, a pioneer in Fiji’s helicopter industry, has recently received the Visionary Award at the ANZ Fiji Excellence Awards 2024 held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort. This prestigious award highlights individuals who exhibit vision, foresight, and innovation in redefining tourism dynamics in Fiji.
Upon receiving the award, Simpson expressed his gratitude towards his wife, Tippy, and his staff, crediting them for the shared vision that made this recognition possible. Having begun his journey in England as a trainee helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy, Simpson faced job loss due to military cutbacks. He then set his sights on the Pacific Islands, which led him to Fiji in the early 1970s.
Simpson’s career took off when he joined Helicopter Utilities, which later transformed into Air Fast. After a series of contracts, he established Pacific Crown Aviation with his American partner Ed Chopot in 1976 and eventually founded Island Hoppers, which became a mainstay in Fiji’s tourism and medical evacuation operations.
His knowledge of Fiji’s hinterland, particularly the interior of Viti Levu, and decades of dedicated service have made him a well-respected figure in the industry. Simpson’s commitment is also evident in the numerous medivacuations he conducted, saving countless lives. His legacy includes being the first Fijian-owned helicopter company owner and serving as a pioneer for future generations in aviation.
Now retired, Simpson and his wife live on the Sunshine Coast, while their son Nigel continues the family tradition as chief engineer at Pacific Crown Aviation in Australia.
This recognition at the ANZ Fiji Excellence Awards is a testament to Simpson’s impact on Fiji’s tourism industry, reminiscent of other exceptional figures in the sector like Penioni Fakauliafa, who was also recently awarded for his outstanding service in hospitality. Both individuals exemplify how dedication and passion can significantly contribute to their communities and elevate Fiji’s profile on the world stage. Their stories are a beacon of hope, showcasing that heartfelt commitment can inspire future generations in tourism and aviation, fostering a culturally rich and welcoming environment for visitors in Fiji.
