Attorney General Graham Leung has been dismissed from his position, less than a year after taking office on June 4, 2024. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed the news to The Fiji Times but did not provide details regarding the reasons for Leung’s removal or potential successors.

This decision comes amid ongoing scrutiny following a Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the appointment of suspended FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali. Leung’s involvement in various inquiries has faced criticism, which may have influenced the move. In earlier statements, he had emphasized the importance of maintaining the independence and integrity of judicial inquiries while urging adherence to the rule of law and due process.

During his tenure, Leung had asserted that the role of Attorney General requires a commitment to ethical governance and the pursuit of reforms aimed at enhancing public trust in Fiji’s political institutions. This situation highlights a critical transitional phase for Fiji, as political leaders navigate complex governance challenges while striving to reinforce accountability and transparency.

Despite the circumstances, there is a sense of hope that these developments may lead to stronger ethical standards within public office and fostering a governance framework that prioritizes accountability.
