With the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau approaching, Team Fiji’s head athletics coach, Fesaitu Mario, is advocating for a long-term strategic approach to training and development. Emphasizing that success should not be confined merely to the upcoming events, he calls on athletes, coaches, and administration to think beyond immediate competitions, with future goals like the Commonwealth Games and the LA 2028 Olympics in view.

Following a productive three-day training camp, Mario noted the critical need for improvements in athlete readiness, coaching standards, and overall support structures. He emphasized that past preparations have often been too short-term, typically ramping up only six to 24 months ahead of major events. “The goal here isn’t just Palau,” Mario stated, highlighting the need for athletes to visualize their impact on a global scale.

To achieve success on the international stage, he stressed the importance of building a sustainable development pathway, which includes not only enhancing athletes’ abilities but also strengthening the capacity of coaches and officials. Acknowledging that real change takes time, he underscored the need for a renewed commitment from Athletics Fiji.

This aligns with ongoing efforts from other athletic leaders, such as long-distance coach Bola Tafou, who has been advocating for comprehensive training initiatives. Tafou has been proactive in working with young athletes through the Athletics Camp, which runs until January, demonstrating a commitment to honing skills early in their careers. He, along with Mario, signifies a unified vision for Fiji’s athletic future, creating a hopeful narrative for the nation’s representation at the Pacific Mini Games and beyond.

With dedicated preparation and a focus on long-term growth, the potential for Fijian athletes is bright, and the upcoming Pacific Mini Games present a valuable opportunity for them to showcase their hard work and dedication on an international stage. This blend of immediate action and future planning could mark a turning point for Fiji’s athletics, inspiring a new generation of athletes committed to excellence.
