As the countdown to the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Koror, Palau approaches, Team Fiji faces financial challenges as athletes struggle to meet a participation levy of $3,000 each. The Games are set to take place from June 29 to July 9, offering a significant opportunity for athletes to showcase their abilities on an international platform.
Athletics Fiji coach Eugene Vollmer highlighted the difficulties athletes, particularly students, are encountering in transitioning from the Coca-Cola Games atmosphere to representing their country at a higher level. He noted that while the government and the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) have substantially subsidized costs—reducing the actual expense per athlete from around $15,000 to $3,000—this levy still represents a significant burden for many families.
In an effort to alleviate this financial pressure, the Fiji Sports Council recently sponsored three athletes by covering their levies. Additionally, Athletics Fiji officials and parents are mobilizing fundraising initiatives, including movie nights and sponsorships, to gather necessary support.
Despite the strain, there is hope within the community. Athletics Fiji’s administrator Fesaitu Mario reported that at least ten high school athletes are still looking for financial assistance, and he expressed optimism that support would come from larger schools and alumni networks. Historical efforts by schools like Marist Brothers and Suva Grammar to fundraise highlight this community spirit.
The sense of determination and resilience among athletes is palpable as they continue to train rigorously for the Games. Vollmer emphasized that this is not just a one-time event for them but a stepping stone towards future competitions, including the 2027 Pacific Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
With 32 athletes selected to represent Fiji, comprising 17 men and 15 women, the team is focused on their preparation while rallying community support for their financial needs. It is a testament to the strength of the Fijian sports community, as they seek not only to compete but also to enhance Fiji’s reputation in the regional sports arena. The collective commitment to support and uplift athletes provides a hopeful outlook as they gear up for this significant international event.
