Athletes in Fiji will be provided with a valuable second chance to qualify for the Fiji Finals this year, as confirmed by Biu Colati, the competitions director for the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association (FSSAA). If athletes do not meet the qualifying standards at their respective zone meets, they will have the opportunity to compete in the Easter Games, which has been recognized as a qualifying event for the Nationals for the first time.
Last year marked the introduction of divisional qualifying zones by the FSSAA, allowing more athletes to participate and secure their spot in the National Championship, which is set to occur from April 24 to 26. The Easter Games, along with additional zone qualifiers for the Northern, Eastern, and Western regions, reinforces the commitment to inclusivity and the development of high-performance athletes within the school’s athletic framework.
This initiative also supports schools that may have previously faced challenges due to late starts in training, ensuring a fair chance for all athletes to showcase their talents. The expanded qualification opportunities signal a robust athletic ecosystem, encouraging deeper engagement from schools and fostering a spirit of camaraderie and competition among young athletes.
As schools ramp up their preparations through inter-house competitions ahead of the zone meets, excitement builds for the upcoming events starting with the Nadi and Nadroga meets on March 20-21 at Churchill Park and Lawaqa Park, respectively. With a focus on enhancing participation and community support, this year’s Fiji Finals are destined to create an electrifying atmosphere, stimulating growth in athletics and inspiring many young athletes across Fiji.
