Athletes in Fiji are set to receive an exciting second opportunity to qualify for the Fiji Finals this year, as confirmed by Biu Colati, the competitions director for the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association (FSSAA). For the first time, athletes who do not meet the qualifying standards at their regional zone meets will have the chance to compete in the Easter Games, which has been designated as a qualifying event for the National Championships.
In a move aimed at fostering greater inclusivity, last year’s introduction of divisional qualifying zones by the FSSAA allowed more athletes to participate and secure their spots in the National Championship, scheduled for April 24 to 26. The addition of the Easter Games, alongside further zone qualifiers for the Northern, Eastern, and Western regions, emphasizes the FSSAA’s commitment to developing high-performance athletes and ensuring every athlete has a fair opportunity to showcase their talents.
This initiative is particularly beneficial for schools that have encountered obstacles due to late starts in training, ensuring that all athletes have equitable chances to compete. The broadened qualification opportunities create a vibrant athletic environment, promoting deeper engagement from schools and fostering friendly competition among young athletes.
As preparations intensify through inter-house competitions leading up to the zone meets, anticipation grows for the events, commencing with the Nadi and Nadroga meets on March 20-21 at Churchill Park and Lawaqa Park, respectively. With an emphasis on participation and community support, this year’s Fiji Finals promise to deliver an exhilarating atmosphere, inspiring young athletes and stimulating growth within the athletic community across Fiji.
This approach not only reflects the FSSAA’s dedication to the development of sport but also encourages a spirit of teamwork and healthy competition among the youth.
