The Ministry of Employment in Fiji has reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding Fijian workers engaged in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme against any form of exploitation. Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh addressed these concerns, assuring that actions are being taken to respond to reports of mistreatment of Fijian workers by foreign employers.

Mr. Singh emphasized the ministry’s proactive steps, highlighting the positive outcomes achieved through the recent implementation of regular visits and the appointment of country liaison officers. Since these measures were introduced, officials have made considerable progress in addressing the issues faced by workers.

During a recent visit, Mr. Singh noted that officials divided into teams to meet as many workers as possible at their various workplaces across Australia, citing the challenge of reaching all 331 locations. They have prioritized visits to areas where negative reports have been received, showcasing their commitment to improving worker conditions.

In addition, Mr. Singh addressed the treatment of foreign migrant workers in Fiji, making it clear that all workers—local and foreign—are entitled to the same labor standards. The government ensures that minimum standards are uniformly applied, reflecting a commitment to fair treatment for all.

This proactive approach demonstrates the Fiji government’s dedication to protecting its workers abroad while also ensuring equitable treatment of all workers within its borders. By addressing concerns and increasing engagement, there is hope for positive developments in worker protection and welfare.
