The eight-day athletics camp organized by the Fiji Sports Council underscores the extensive journey ahead for aspiring athletes in Fiji. Athletics officer Bola Tafoou acknowledges that, while progress has been made, “We are nowhere near Olympic level yet, but we’re here to build a solid foundation for the future.”
This camp targets athletes who possess limited or no prior experience in athletics. Tafoou highlights the importance of teaching participants the fundamentals of the sport, including throws, jumps, endurance, and recovery. “These kids are learning fundamental skills, which is crucial for their long-term development,” he stated.
Although the camp has shown some promising results, Tafoou maintains a realistic perspective on Fiji’s current position in the athletics sphere. He added, “We’re not even close to Olympic level. But it’s about developing athletes who can reach that level in the future.”
Emphasizing the significance of structured training, the camp focuses on long-term training cycles, featuring both micro and macro cycles to prevent overworking the athletes and to manage their recovery. “Recovery is just as important as training,” Tafoou pointed out.
This initiative represents a crucial step toward elevating athletics in Fiji. Although the aspiration of reaching Olympic status may seem far-off, with sustained effort and commitment, Fiji can cultivate a new generation of athletes capable of competing on the world stage.
In the meantime, the camp also prioritizes instilling discipline, time management, and perseverance—life skills that will serve these athletes well both on and off the track.
This positive approach highlights not only the dedication towards developing athletic talent in Fiji but also reinforces the notion that even grassroots initiatives can lay the groundwork for future success in sports.
