Alice Hill, a talented glass artist and owner of Hot Glass Fiji, warmly greeted attendees at the “Alchemy” art exhibition held at Suva’s Grand Pacific Hotel. This exhibition features the creative talents of ten local artists, who have come together to showcase their works through the transformation of raw materials like ink, clay, glass, sand, metal, and wood into extraordinary pieces of art. The event opened on Thursday and wraps up tomorrow.

The inspiration behind “Alchemy” stems from the desire to celebrate these materials and their ability to become stunning objects. Hill, who has been living in Fiji for 22 years, draws on the underwater beauty of Fiji’s reefs for her own glass creations. Her works reflect intricate designs inspired by marine flora and fauna, capturing the essence of what she loves about the ocean.

Originally from the UK, Alice trained extensively in glassblowing before moving to Fiji, where she initially operated a scuba diving business. She later transitioned into the art of glassblowing, aiming to introduce this unique craft to Fiji while training local artisans. Today, her studio employs five glassblowers, all skilled in the art of creating pieces that resonate with Fiji’s cultural and natural heritage.

Alice emphasizes that the journey to mastering glassblowing requires not just innate talent but a steadfast commitment and plenty of practice. She believes that inspiration is fundamental to an artist’s work, and her pieces reflect the diverse landscapes of Fiji, from oceans to rainforests.

The “Alchemy” exhibition not only highlights beautiful artwork but also aims to promote appreciation for local and Indigenous artists, showcasing the unique talents within Fiji. Alice hopes that visitors will recognize the creativity and craftsmanship present within the exhibition, encouraging a broader recognition of Fiji’s artistic landscape.

In summary, the “Alchemy” art exhibition serves as a vibrant celebration of local artistry in Fiji, driven by passion and a shared love for the island’s beauty and culture. Alice Hill’s work exemplifies the transformative power of art and its ability to connect people to their environment in meaningful ways. This event presents an opportunity for the community to appreciate and support the rich artistic heritage of Fiji.
