Alice Hill, the proud owner of Hot Glass Fiji, warmly greeted visitors to the “Alchemy” art exhibition at Suva’s Grand Pacific Hotel, showcasing a deep personal connection to Fiji and its culture. This exhibition, which opened Thursday and concludes tomorrow, features ten local artists committed to celebrating raw materials that transform into extraordinary art.

The concept behind “Alchemy” arose from a desire to honor the transformation of various materials—including ink, clay, glass, sand, metal, and wood—into remarkable artworks. Hill described her pieces, inspired by the vibrant underwater life surrounding Fiji, as interpretations of her experiences while scuba diving. Her creations aim to highlight the intricate beauty of the ocean and nature.

Originally from the UK, Alice moved to Fiji 22 years ago after training for seven years as a glassblower in London. She and her husband initially operated a scuba diving business before Alice ventured into the world of glass art, training local artisans in the craft. Today, she leads a talented team at her studio in Sigatoka, where each piece reflects the unique essence of Fijian culture and environment.

Alice noted that mastering glassblowing requires patience and dedication, which she emphasizes to new glassblowers. While her recent works came together quickly, their creation is the result of years of experience. She passionately believes that inspiration is crucial for an artist, and she draws hers from Fiji’s diverse ecosystems and cultural heritage.

The objective of the “Alchemy” exhibition goes beyond showcasing art; it seeks to raise awareness of local talent and the beauty of Fijian art among the community. Alice hopes that attendees recognize the skills and creativity present in Fiji, as all ten featured artists draw inspiration from their love for the island and its natural wonders.

This exhibition not only serves as a platform for local artists but also fosters a deeper appreciation of cultural connections through art. Alice’s work inspires a sense of pride and connectivity to Fiji, encouraging everyone to interpret that bond in their own unique way.

Overall, the “Alchemy” exhibition highlights the profound impact of local artistry and inspires hope for a future where Fijian art continues to thrive and gain recognition.
