Team Fiji is diligently preparing for the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau, with the archery team facing significant challenges due to limited facilities and funding. The team manager, Caroll Sela, emphasizes the hard work of the four-member squad, which includes experienced archers Kavi Gounder, Nathan Kirk, Patrick Nadan, and Chaandvi Prasad—a veteran who previously competed in the Paris Olympic Games.
Despite not featuring new athletes, the team is focused on maintaining optimal training routines to enhance skills and avoid injuries. Sela notes that their experience competing at both the 2023 Pacific Games and the 2024 World Archery Oceania Continental Qualifier will be beneficial in managing the pressures of competition.
Sela’s concerns about the lack of proper training facilities and the steep costs associated with international competition highlight a systemic issue facing Fijian sports. The ongoing need for more funding to develop coaches and technical skills remains vital for the growth of archery in Fiji. She stresses the importance of family support in balancing their demanding training schedules with other commitments.
With travel plans well underway and consistent communication with FASANOC, the team is optimistic as they aim for medals. They view this event as a crucial step towards the 2027 Pacific Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, embracing the upcoming archery competition scheduled from June 29 to July 9 in Palau.
The support from the community is also being felt across different sports disciplines in Fiji, showing shared commitment and enthusiasm leading up to the games. As Team Fiji continues to prepare, there is hope for not only individual success but also a collective representation that showcases the resilience of Fijian athletes on an international stage.
