Former Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Acting Commissioner Francis Puleiwai has been presented with two options: reinstatement or compensation, according to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. This development comes in the wake of Barbara Malimali’s suspension from her role as FICAC Commissioner, confirmed just yesterday.

The push for Puleiwai’s reinstatement is based on the recommendations from a recent Commission of Inquiry (COI) report, which concluded that Malimali’s appointment was illegal. While the COI report specifically recommended revocation of Malimali’s appointment, President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu issued the suspension letter instead.

Prime Minister Rabuka asserted that his recommendations to the President are grounded on the COI’s findings. He has appointed Suva-based lawyer Lavinia Rokoika as the acting Commissioner during the investigation into allegations against Malimali outlined in the COI report. Additionally, the role of FICAC Deputy Commissioner Lisiate Fotofili has also been rescinded.

“This situation reflects ongoing challenges within Fiji’s anti-corruption framework and highlights the necessity for systemic reforms,” said Rabuka, calling for patience from the people of Fiji as they work to implement the COI report while respecting the civil rights of the accused. He emphasized that transparency is paramount as the government navigates these sensitive investigations.

The COI report, comprehensive in its assessment, spans 648 pages and contains multiple recommendations aimed at reinforcing the integrity of Fiji’s governance structures. By addressing these issues, there is potential for fostering increased accountability and public trust in government operations.

This situation marks a significant moment for Fiji’s political landscape, as it presents an opportunity for profound reform within the FICAC to ensure it operates independently of political influences—a goal that many citizens hope will be achieved for the betterment of governance in the nation.
