Fiji’s Angeline Rekha, a talented central defender for the Fiji Kulas, has made a significant move in her football career by signing a professional contract in New Zealand. The 20-year-old native of Ba departed the country yesterday to join Western Springs in Auckland, marking a historic milestone as she becomes the first female Fijian footballer to secure a professional contract in New Zealand.
Rekha has signed a one-year deal with the club and is expected to bring her skills and experience to the New Zealand Women’s National League, enhancing the competition with her talent. Having started her football journey at a young age, she made her debut representing Ba at just 13 years old. Rekha has also captained both the Fiji U16 and U19 teams in the OFC Championship and was part of the groundbreaking squad that competed in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia last year.
This venture not only represents a personal achievement for Rekha, but it also signals a positive development for women’s football in Fiji, showcasing the potential for growth and recognition at international levels. As she embarks on this new chapter, there’s hope that her journey will inspire young athletes in Fiji and beyond to pursue their dreams in sports.
