The Fijian Government is considering increasing the number of honorary consuls, particularly in the capitals of its Pacific Island neighbors. This initiative is outlined in the Foreign Policy White Paper 2024, which was launched earlier this week.

This document marks Fiji’s first comprehensive Foreign Policy White Paper, detailing the strategies the country will pursue over the next decade to address complex diplomatic challenges. It emphasizes that honorary consuls can serve as a cost-effective way to enhance Fiji’s diplomatic stature and offer consular support to the burgeoning Fijian diaspora.

The White Paper states, “Ultimately, a resilient foreign policy depends on the backing and comprehension of the Fijian people.” It underscores the importance of having an informed public that understands the objectives of Fiji’s foreign policy and how these objectives relate to their security and economic wellbeing.

Furthermore, the Government acknowledges the necessity of expanding Fiji’s diplomatic presence to effectively promote its foreign policy. While the document recognizes that achieving this goal will take time, it commits to gradually establishing new diplomatic missions in key strategic areas.
