Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, has announced that the country is progressing well towards its goal of welcoming one million tourists by the end of this year. During a workshop organized by the South Pacific Tourism Organization, Gavoka highlighted that from January to August, Fiji has welcomed approximately 640,724 visitors, marking a 7 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Gavoka emphasized that this growth is more than just numbers; it serves as a reflection of Fiji’s resilience and attractiveness as a premier global destination. He expressed the country’s commitment to achieving the ambitious target of one million visitors by the end of 2024, acknowledging the responsibility that comes with this goal.
The workshop aims to address climate resilience and sustainable tourism practices. Gavoka noted the importance of innovation in the tourism industry to combat the effects of climate change. He stressed that the gathering serves as a platform for developing innovative solutions and resilient strategies for tourism.
Attendees of the workshop included representatives from various Pacific Island nations, such as Tonga, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Vanuatu, and Papua New Guinea. This event is vital for tackling the challenges posed by climate change, and Fiji is leading by incorporating Indigenous Knowledge and Nature-Based Solutions into its tourism strategies to ensure environmental protection and cultural preservation.
The participation of key organizations like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Department of Commerce highlights the importance of collaboration in safeguarding the islands and sustaining the vital tourism sector. The workshop’s focus is on enhancing local capacity and fostering cooperation for effective climate change adaptation throughout the Pacific Islands.
Tourism in Fiji significantly contributes to the national economy, accounting for around 40% of the GDP and supporting approximately 119,000 jobs. The increase in tourist numbers presents an opportunity to improve marketing and visitor experiences while promoting sustainable tourism that benefits both the environment and local communities.
This event underscores Fiji’s leadership in advocating for climate resilience and environmental responsibility within the tourism sector, turning challenges into opportunities and setting an example of sustainable tourism practices for the world to follow.
