Fiji’s Ambassador Strengthens Ties in Nauru: A New Chapter Unfolds

Mr. William Toganivalu, Fiji’s traveling ambassador to the Pacific Island Countries, presented his letter of credentials to His Excellency David Adeang, the president of the Republic of Nauru, as Fiji’s non-resident high commissioner.

Ambassador Toganivalu received a formal welcome that included a customary Guard of Honour from the Nauru Police Force.

During their meeting, Ambassador Toganivalu expressed appreciation to President Adeang for the warm reception and highlighted the enduring friendship and cooperation between Fiji and Nauru, grounded in shared cultural values and a commitment to regional development.

President Adeang reaffirmed Nauru’s determination to collaborate with Fiji in strengthening bilateral ties and addressing the opportunities and challenges facing the Pacific region.

He also recalled his June meeting with Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister of Fiji, during which he reiterated Nauru’s support for the Ocean of Peace initiative aimed at promoting stability and peace in the Pacific.

Following the presentation of his credentials, Ambassador Toganivalu made courtesy calls on several Nauruan government ministers, including Reagan Winson Aliklik, Minister of Transport; Honorable Charmaine Scotty, Minister of Health and Medical Services; Darrina Kun, Secretary of Education; and Lionel Rouwen Aingimea, Former President and Current Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Justice, and Border Control.

The Fijian community in Nauru traditionally welcomed Ambassador Toganivalu before a Talanoa session, where Fijian nationals expressed interest in immigration services, work contracts, and other relevant concerns.

Additionally, Ambassador Toganivalu discussed the innovative initiatives taken by Fiji’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to engage with the Fijian diaspora, particularly the updated website that now includes a portal for diaspora members to register their contact information.

He noted that this innovation would enable the Ministry to respond more effectively in emergencies and improve information access regarding Fijian citizens living abroad.

Moreover, Ambassador Toganivalu expressed deep appreciation for the remittances contributed by the Fijian diaspora, which support the economies of both Nauru and Fiji, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage and maintaining strong connections to one’s homeland.
