The Fiji Amateur Boxing competition held by the Kwaca Na Vatu Boxing Club in Navua on Saturday was a remarkable event with a record of 50 bouts taking place. This competition was the largest in the past year, reflecting the growth of amateur boxing in Fiji.
Cam Todd, the head coach of Fiji Amateur Boxing, shared his enthusiasm for the event and commended the Navua venue for hosting the competition. He noted that this was the first amateur boxing event in Navua, and the turnout of the crowd was impressive.
“First time Amateur Boxing in Navua, what a big crowd and the venue was great and perfect for boxing,” Todd stated. He also recognized the potential of the athletes, adding that while there was work to be done, the enthusiasm and performance of the fighters were commendable.
Todd announced plans to organize another event in Navua in December, aligning with the visit of the New Zealand junior youth team, which would add an international aspect to the competition. “I’m hoping to get another international here, we got New Zealand junior youth team coming in December, I would really like to host it here in Navua,” he mentioned.
The Kwaca Na Vatu Boxing Club had a strong presence in the competition with at least 20 boxers participating. Todd commented on the club’s achievements, stating, “For a brand-new club they are doing well.” He acknowledged their learning curve but praised the determination and strength of their boxers.
“They need a little bit of work in their technique, but the support they receive from the community is just amazing,” he added. Todd encouraged more young people to engage in amateur boxing, highlighting the sport’s valuable lessons and benefits.
