According to the latest UNAIDS 2025 Global AIDS Update report, the number of people living with HIV in Fiji has surged tenfold over the past decade, rising from less than 500 cases in 2014 to approximately 5,900 in 2024. This dramatic increase has placed Fiji second only to the Philippines in terms of HIV infection growth within the Asia-Pacific region, having surpassed Papua New Guinea.
In the past year alone, new HIV diagnoses in Fiji have tripled, raising urgent concerns among public health officials. Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health, described the situation as severe, with projections suggesting that the number of new infections may exceed 7,000.
