Fiji’s Alarming Child Violence Rates: A Call to Action

Recent data reveals a troubling reality: about 72 percent of children in Fiji have faced some form of violence, encompassing physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Disturbingly, many of these incidents occur in the very places where children should feel safe—homes, schools, and communities.

In light of these findings and in response to a recent viral video showcasing violence against young children, Sashi Kiran, Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, emphasized the urgent need for education on positive parenting techniques. She pointed out that many young parents may lack support from extended family members in learning effective parenting skills.

The Ministry is taking action by launching educational initiatives focused on good parenting and awareness of what constitutes violence against children, along with preventive measures. Kiran stated, “Every child in Fiji has the right to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, free from fear or harm.” To combat child violence more effectively, the Ministry is enhancing reporting mechanisms and encourages the public to reach out to their 24/7 child helpline (1325) for reporting abuse, assuring confidentiality and prompt action to safeguard victims.

Moreover, the Ministry is expanding counseling services, establishing safe shelters, and collaborating with NGOs to create rehabilitation programs for child victims and their families. Kiran urges citizens to be responsible in sharing sensitive content on social media, advocating for reporting such incidents rather than circulating videos that could further traumatize victims.

She called on families, community leaders, educators, and all citizens to unite with the Ministry in fostering a safer environment for children, stating, “Let us be their voice and their shield, ensuring their well-being and future.” Kiran expressed hope that through collective efforts, Fiji can break the cycle of violence and build a society where every child is protected, valued, and cherished.

This situation, while alarming, also presents an opportunity for communities to come together and create a nurturing environment for future generations. Promoting positive parenting and raising awareness can lead to substantive change, ensuring that children in Fiji can thrive in a safe and supportive setting.
