Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa has expressed grave concerns about the alarming rates of child abuse in Fiji, revealing that a staggering 68 percent of cases reported this year involve neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. As the Shadow Minister for Health and a Church leader, Ravunawa highlighted the dire implications of these statistics, which were disclosed through the Child Welfare Act National Database, showing a total of 1,477 child abuse cases reported in 2023.
Ravunawa pointed out that a worrying 73 percent of the perpetrators are individuals known to the victims, with 50 percent being immediate family members. He emphasized the urgent need for action, stating, “We need to stop being spectators to this horrifying reality. It is time we raise our voices.” He called on the Ministry of Women and Children to proactively educate the public about children’s rights and improve advocacy for child protection.
On this World Children’s Day, Ravunawa urged not just passive observation of the day but an active commitment to prioritizing children’s safety and well-being. He reminded the public that children are the future of Fiji and their safety is a collective responsibility that should drive every action moving forward.
This article sheds light on a pressing social issue that demands immediate attention, fostering hope that increased dialogue and advocacy can lead to tangible improvements in the protection and welfare of children in Fiji. Together, the community can work towards a safer environment for future generations.
