Akeneta Lutu, the Fiji Finals champion, made an impressive comeback despite being unwell, breaking the senior girls’ 1500-meter record at the Triple N Zone competition for Lomaivuna High School. The Year 12 student, who has been a standout performer for her school over the past two years, previously clinched gold in the 3000-meter race at the Fiji Finals on two occasions.

Lutu clocked in a remarkable time of 5 minutes and 25.15 seconds, shattering the prior record of 5 minutes and 35.89 seconds that was established in 2021. She expressed that her dedication to her school and team motivated her to compete today, despite her illness, showing incredible determination and resilience. “I didn’t expect to win or even break the record because I’m feeling sick,” she admitted, highlighting her commitment to her school.

In 2023, Lutu represented Fiji at the Pacific Games and made history as the first woman from her country to compete in the World Cross Country Championship in Australia. Looking ahead, she aims to defend her title in the 3000-meter event scheduled for tomorrow, adding to her growing list of achievements.

The achievements of young athletes like Lutu not only display individual talent but also reflect a burgeoning competitive spirit among Fijian youth in athletics. This competition has seen multiple records set, including the senior boys’ 1500-meter event, indicating a promising future for sports in the region.

As athletes continue to break records and inspire their peers, the overall atmosphere promotes the values of hard work and community, encouraging more young talents to aspire to greater heights. With Lutu’s accomplishments and her upcoming challenges, there’s much to look forward to in the world of athletics in Fiji.
