Fiji’s airport infrastructure is facing financial challenges, particularly concerning government-owned airports, including Labasa Airport. Mesake Nawari, CEO of Fiji Airports, emphasized that Nadi International Airport is the only profitable facility among the 14 airports under their management, resulting in significant limitations regarding funding for infrastructure improvements.

Nawari stated that there is no “free capital” available to support the ambitious 25-year infrastructure development program aimed at enhancing these facilities. His comments followed increasing inquiries about delays in the development of Labasa Airport, which is one of the government-owned airports managed by the organization.

However, there is positive news regarding Labasa Airport, as a temporary terminal opened a week ahead of schedule. The rapid completion was made possible through extended working hours, highlighting a commitment to expedite further developments. This temporary facility has a seating capacity of 70 and is designed to accommodate the average of 200 daily passengers, which may lead to some congestion. To help manage overflow, additional temporary structures have been erected outside the terminal.

The temporary terminal is part of a significant $8 million project aimed at facilitating necessary upgrades at the airport. Preliminary work for a permanent terminal—expected to increase seating capacity to 138 and include a distinct arrivals hall—will begin soon with construction projected to take approximately 18 months.

Upgrading Labasa Airport has long been overdue, facing multiple challenges, including funding constraints and pandemic-related delays. Nevertheless, these latest developments reflect a hopeful trajectory towards modernizing Fiji’s airport infrastructure.
