Fiji Airports is currently facing substantial financial challenges in its efforts to enhance airport infrastructure, particularly at its government-owned facilities, including Labasa Airport. Mesake Nawari, the CEO of Fiji Airports, indicated that Nadi International Airport remains the only profitable airport among the 14 facilities managed by the organization, which complicates funding for necessary improvements across the network.

This facility, part of an $8 million initiative, has a seating capacity of just 70, which may lead to congestion as the airport sees an average of 200 passengers daily. To mitigate overflow, additional temporary structures have been erected outside the terminal.

The temporary terminal serves as a precursor to a forthcoming permanent structure, which is expected to significantly enhance passenger services. This new terminal will accommodate up to 138 passengers and will include a separate arrivals hall. Construction is slated to begin soon, with estimated completion within 18 months.
