Fiji’s airport infrastructure development is at a critical juncture, with Nadi International Airport remaining as the only profitable facility under the management of Fiji Airports. CEO Mesake Nawari has emphasized the challenges in financing upgrades for other government-owned airports due to a lack of “free capital.” This situation arises as attention focuses on the delayed development projects at Labasa Airport, one of the 14 government-owned airports managed by Fiji Airports.

Recently, a temporary terminal at Labasa Airport opened ahead of schedule, demonstrating efforts to expedite developments as part of an overarching $8 million project aimed at improving airport services. Nawari noted that the temporary terminal, which will operate until a permanent facility is built, has a seating capacity of 70 passengers. However, this is expected to lead to congestion, given that Labasa Airport serves an average of 200 travelers daily. To alleviate this issue, additional temporary structures have been deployed to accommodate overflow.

The permanent terminal, which aims to enhance passenger experience with a capacity of 138 seats and a distinct arrivals area, is projected to take about 18 months to complete. The long-awaited upgrades at Labasa Airport have faced numerous challenges, including financial constraints and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
