Fiji’s Airport Dilemma: Profitability and Infrastructure Woes

Spread the love

Fiji Airports is currently working on extensive infrastructure plans to enhance airport facilities across the nation, as emphasized by CEO Mesake Nawari. Notably, Nadi International Airport remains the only profitable airport managed by Fiji Airports. The focus now rests on developing Labasa Airport, which has faced delays and funding challenges.

The temporary terminal at Labasa Airport was opened ahead of schedule and features a current seating capacity of 70 for departing passengers, although it is expected to face congestion with an average of 200 passengers daily. To mitigate this, additional temporary structures have been set up to manage overflow.

This project, costing approximately $8 million, is set to culminate in the construction of a new permanent terminal, which will include separate areas for arrivals and departures, aimed to accommodate more passengers—up to 138 in the new terminal. The construction of this new terminal is anticipated to be completed within 18 months, with work fully commencing next month.

The need for upgrades like these has grown increasingly urgent, particularly due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on aviation infrastructure over the past few years. Funding for such improvements has been a topic of discussion, especially as Fiji Airports is also tasked with managing a total of 13 other government-owned airports that are not turning a profit. Nawari reiterated that capital is limited, making self-financing of these projects challenging.

Overall, the upgrades at Labasa Airport not only indicate progress in improving travel experiences but also reflect a commitment to boosting the local economy and infrastructure resilience in Fiji. As these projects unfold, they can potentially enhance air travel for residents and tourists alike, paving the way for increased tourism opportunities in the future.
