Fiji Airports is currently facing significant financial challenges as it works to renovate its state-owned airports, particularly Labasa Airport. Mesake Nawari, the CEO of Fiji Airports, noted that Nadi International Airport is the sole profitable facility among the 14 airports under management. This profitability issue limits the funding available for much-needed improvements across the other facilities, including Labasa Airport.

Nawari emphasized that there is no “free capital” to support a comprehensive 25-year infrastructure development program that aims to revitalize these facilities. His comments come in light of public concerns regarding the development delays at Labasa Airport, one of the government-owned airports managed by Fiji Airports.

Despite the funding challenges, positive developments have emerged. A temporary terminal at Labasa Airport opened a week ahead of schedule, thanks to extended working hours aimed at ensuring timely completion. This temporary facility, which accommodates 70 passengers, is crucial given that Labasa Airport sees an average of 200 passengers daily. To manage potential congestion due to the limited seating capacity, additional temporary structures have been erected outside.

This temporary terminal is part of an $8 million initiative designed to enhance airport services, and plans for a more permanent terminal will soon be underway. The new facility is expected to increase seating capacity to 138 and will include a separate arrivals hall, significantly improving the travel experience. Construction for the new terminal is anticipated to begin shortly and will take approximately 18 months to complete.

The upgrade of Labasa Airport has faced delays spanning several decades, primarily due to financial constraints and setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these latest developments indicate a renewed commitment to modernizing Fiji’s airport infrastructure, which is vital for improving travel experiences and stimulating tourism—an essential sector for economic growth in the region.
