Fiji Airports is grappling with financial challenges as it aims to upgrade infrastructure across its network of government-owned airports, most notably at Labasa Airport. Mesake Nawari, the CEO of Fiji Airports, has pointed out that Nadi International Airport is the only profitable airport, making it difficult to reallocate necessary funds for extensive improvements planned over the next 25 years.

Nawari’s remarks come in light of delays regarding the development of Labasa Airport and concerns over the profitability of the other airports managed by Fiji Airports. Recently, a temporary terminal at Labasa Airport opened a week ahead of schedule, thanks to extended working hours put in by the construction crew to ensure a timely rollout. The temporary facility, which accommodates up to 70 passengers, will serve as a stopgap until a permanent terminal is developed.

This temporary terminal is part of an ambitious $8 million project aimed at enhancing airport services. The construction for the new permanent terminal, designed to increase seating capacity to 138 and to include a dedicated arrivals hall, is set to commence soon with estimated completion within 18 months.

Despite the operational challenges, including limited seating leading to expected congestion—Labasa Airport averages 200 daily passengers—Nawari has indicated that efforts are being made to mitigate overflow, such as erecting additional temporary structures outside the terminal.

The long-awaited upgrade of Labasa Airport has faced decades of delays, noticeably worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
