Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka has provided insights into the current performance of Fiji’s Asian routes, noting continued adjustments in capacity driven by demand. Despite a recent decline, including the reduction of Fiji Airways’ Hong Kong flights to three times a week due to lower demand for 2024, there are signs of recovery.

Mr. Gavoka is optimistic about the early performance of 2025, with prospects of increasing flights back to five weekly or potentially launching a direct service to Shanghai, depending on ongoing negotiations related to the Air Services Agreements (ASA) with China. This is particularly hopeful given that direct flights to mainland China could not only benefit tourism but also strengthen economic ties.

In contrast to the Hong Kong route, Mr. Gavoka highlighted the positive performance of flights to Japan, where Fiji Airways currently operates two weekly flights to Tokyo and is considering adding a third flight if the demand continues on this positive trajectory. The routes to Singapore are also being evaluated for potential expansion, reliant on the airline’s ability to secure advantageous codeshare agreements, especially with Indian carriers.

These developments align with recent reports emphasizing Fiji Airways’ strategy to enhance flight frequencies while maintaining competitive pricing. The airline is also recognized for its commitment to increasing awareness of Fiji as a destination, which is essential for attracting travelers from around the globe.

Overall, the Fijian government and Fiji Airways are actively engaged in promoting air connectivity, reflecting a broader strategy aimed at stimulating tourism and economic growth within the region. This commitment offers hope for further recovery and growth in the Fijian tourism sector as they navigate the evolving aviation landscape.
