Ailava Samuels, selected to represent Fiji at the upcoming Miss Pacific Islands Pageant, remains centered and composed amidst online criticism. The 19-year-old expressed gratitude for the unwavering support she has received from her family, team, and the pageant committee as she prepares for this significant event.

“Everybody’s entitled to their own feelings and opinions, and they’re allowed to express them freely,” said Ms. Samuels. She acknowledged that being in the spotlight can be challenging for a young woman, but emphasized that the encouragement from her support system has helped her maintain peace and confidence. “With the support that I’ve gotten from my team, my family, and the committee, I can say that I am good. I feel good. I’m at peace,” she added.

Ms. Samuels is aware that public reactions in Fiji can often stem from strong emotions. However, she believes that community loyalty assists her in handling the criticism constructively. “We Fijians do and say a lot of things out of emotion, and it’s OK. It’s just that the way we deliver and try to make a point is wrong,” she reflected.

The young pageant contestant shared valuable advice from the reigning Miss Pacific Islands, Litara Loma Leilani Ieremia-Allan of Samoa, who encouraged her to embrace loyalty as a vital Pacific value. “Because of all the support I’m getting, the positivity shown by my family and supporters overpowers all the negativity I receive,” Ms. Samuels remarked. With determination, she feels empowered to pursue her goals and is honored by the opportunity to represent her country.

The Miss Pacific Islands Pageant is set to be held at Prince Charles Park in Nadi from February 13-20, showcasing the talent and beauty of women from across the Pacific.
