This issue was discussed at a recent workshop organized by Fiji National University, which focused on how AI can enhance business productivity and foster innovation in the Fijian economy.
Francois Trachy, Director of the National Training and Productivity Centre, emphasized that the current wave of AI represents a significant evolution in technology, akin to the historical industrial revolution. He pointed out that just as during the industrial revolution, those who failed to adapt faced challenges, while those who embraced change experienced increased productivity and improvements in their quality of life. Trachy remarked, “It’s going to happen whether we like it or not… so we better adapt, but responsibly,” signifying the imperative for proactive adaptation to these advancements.
Despite acknowledging the sweeping changes that AI will bring, Trachy also highlighted that the best defense against potential negative consequences is the establishment of strong regulations to oversee AI implementation and protect the workforce globally. This statement stresses the importance of regulatory frameworks that can ensure fair practices amidst rapid technological transitions.
Fiji’s existing discussions surrounding preparedness for AI were mirrored in the National Budget Forum, where proposals were made for investments in AI education and infrastructure. Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad recognized the urgency of preparing Fiji’s workforce for the disruptions AI might cause across various professions, affirming that the government must pay attention to international trends in AI governance to guide national strategies.
Moreover, the Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) has voiced its support for AI integration within workplaces, underscoring the necessity of respecting workers’ rights throughout this transition. Discussions included the importance of training workers adequately to use AI technologies effectively while raising concerns about potential workload increases and wage inequalities.
As Fiji embarks on this journey of integrating AI into its economy, the focus on education reform and digital literacy aims to equip youth with the necessary skills for future job markets. With ongoing initiatives from the Ministry of Education and engagements with international best practices, there is a hopeful outlook for the future, as these efforts seek to balance innovation with worker protection and societal advancement.
