Fiji’s National Budget has come under scrutiny for its lack of a strategic plan addressing the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI). During a recent National Budget Forum, a tech enthusiast expressed concern that while basic AI applications are now common on social media, more sophisticated AI tools will soon impact various professions across the nation, from musicians and artists to lawyers and healthcare professionals.
The attendee criticized the budget for failing to allocate funds specifically for AI education and national preparedness. He proposed a targeted investment of $20 million to develop AI infrastructure and training, as well as to prepare the public sector for these advancements.
In response, Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad acknowledged the absence of dedicated funding for AI initiatives in this year’s budget. However, he highlighted existing broader financial support through the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Trade and Communications that could facilitate progress in AI-related endeavors. Professor Prasad also mentioned that the new Education Commission is tasked with recommending adaptations to the education system in light of ongoing digital trends, including AI. He assured that Fiji is closely monitoring international efforts, particularly those from regions like the European Union and Australia, as they navigate similar challenges.
