Minister for Agriculture and Waterways Vatimi Rayalu is proposing a substantial budget allocation of $250 million for the upcoming fiscal year, which is more than double the ministry’s current budget of $101.2 million. Although the current budget recently saw an increase of $6 million, Rayalu argues that it remains insufficient to fulfill the needs of farmers and rural communities.

He emphasizes that ongoing challenges in both agriculture and waterways necessitate genuine investment to enhance productivity and support local farmers. Rayalu’s vision includes elevating agricultural processing through the involvement of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), private companies, and existing processors.

The minister’s budget request highlights a dual focus: providing farmers with essential tools, infrastructure, and opportunities, while also addressing the critical need for repairing waterways infrastructure to safeguard crops and communities. By enhancing value addition to Fiji’s agricultural output, Rayalu aims to strengthen the economic resilience of the agricultural sector.

This proposed budget aligns with recent governmental initiatives aimed at boosting rural infrastructure investment, as seen in similar discussions led by other ministers. It reflects a broader commitment to fostering inclusive growth and enhancing market accessibility for rural communities, thereby contributing positively to Fiji’s development trajectory.

Rayalu’s proactive stance holds potential for significant advancements in agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods, reinforcing the importance of sustainable practices and community resilience in the face of existing challenges.
