The Cabinet has approved a comprehensive review of the agricultural legislation in Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the importance of an effective legislative framework for agriculture, which is crucial for promoting sustainable development, ensuring food and nutrition security, aiding in poverty alleviation, and strengthening the resilience of rural and vulnerable communities.

The Prime Minister noted that the current agricultural laws are encountering significant challenges due to rapid changes in the economy, geographical factors, and climate conditions. He highlighted that the review aims to align these regulations with best international practices and adapt to the changing agricultural landscape.

An extensive consultation process will accompany the review, aiming to gather diverse input to inform necessary changes.

This initiative illustrates a proactive approach to enhancing Fiji’s agricultural sector, which is vital for the nation’s economic stability and community well-being. By engaging various stakeholders in the review process, the government is taking a substantial step toward a more sustainable and resilient future for its agricultural industry. This emphasis on adaptability is particularly timely, as global agriculture faces unprecedented challenges and shifts.
