The Fijian Cabinet has approved a review of the country’s agricultural legislation. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the importance of a strong legislative framework in agriculture for promoting sustainable development, ensuring food and nutrition security, reducing poverty, and enhancing the resilience of rural communities.

He pointed out that the existing laws must adapt to ongoing challenges posed by economic changes, geographical shifts, and climate variability. To address these issues, the review aims to align Fiji’s agricultural legislation with international best practices and emerging trends in the agricultural sector.

Moreover, the government plans to engage in a thorough consultation process during the review to incorporate feedback and insights from various stakeholders.

This initiative marks a progressive step towards modernizing Fiji’s agricultural sector, potentially leading to improved livelihoods and food systems in the country. The focus on sustainability and resilience is particularly hopeful, as it emphasizes the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities and ensuring a stable future for agriculture in Fiji.
