Fiji’s agriculture sector must adapt to tackle emerging challenges. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives and SMEs, Manoa Kamikamica, highlighted that while agriculture has long been a cornerstone of the Fijian economy, it still faces issues such as fluctuating international market prices and declining product quality due to climate change.

Mr. Kamikamica emphasized that agriculture is essential not just as an industry but as a vital aspect of life in Fiji and the broader Pacific region. He made these comments during the launch of the 2024 Agri-Innovate Business Plan Competition in Suva.

In his remarks, he stated, “As we approach a future filled with transformation and progress toward a greener economy, it is evident that the agriculture industry must also evolve to address new challenges and seize opportunities for economic advancement.”

The Agri-Innovate competition aims to provide small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the agriculture sector with a platform to present their innovative ideas in agricultural production, both to Fiji and the Pacific region.

Joann Young, the Assistant Representative to Fiji from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, emphasized the importance of agriculture in Fiji’s economy, noting its role in providing jobs, ensuring food security, and contributing significantly to the national GDP.

She pointed out that MSMEs in agriculture often encounter obstacles such as limited market access, lack of technical expertise, and insufficient financial resources. Ms. Young advocated for the nurturing and support of these entrepreneurs to maximize the agricultural sector’s potential, drive economic growth, and foster a sustainable future for Fiji.

She urged stakeholders, including government bodies, development partners, and private sector players, to harness innovation and entrepreneurship to revitalize Fiji’s agricultural landscape. By collaborating and empowering MSMEs, the full potential of these enterprises can be realized, leading to positive transformation within the agricultural sector in Fiji.
