Deputy Secretary for Agricultural Development Dr. Tekini Nakidakida has emphasized the need for collaboration among various stakeholders in Fiji’s agriculture sector to enhance supply chains, expand market access, and promote sustainable farming practices. This call to action was made during an agriculture workshop held in Nausori, which served as a vital platform for exchanging data and ideas aimed at strengthening the agricultural industry.

Dr. Nakidakida highlighted that ensuring Fiji’s competitiveness in global markets requires a united effort between growers, exporters, regulators, and other industry stakeholders. The discussions at the workshop covered crucial topics such as market trends, the adoption of sustainable practices, innovative technologies, and navigating trade regulations.

This approach aligns with recent sentiments expressed at the 2024 National Agriculture Show, where officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka, reiterated agriculture’s essential role in Fijian society. Gavoka pointed out that through initiatives like the Farm to Fork program, local farmers can better connect with the tourism sector, which supports sustainable practices and boosts the economy. Statistics shared indicate a positive trend, with a 16% increase in exports of fresh and chilled products during the first half of 2024.

The continuation of workshops organized by partners like the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries and the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji signals ongoing efforts to empower farmers and ensure the resilience of Fiji’s agricultural landscape.

The combined efforts of government bodies and industry players are indicative of a hopeful future in which the agricultural sector can thrive against challenges such as climate change and fluctuating market demands. This collaborative framework not only promotes economic sustainability but also enhances the standard of living for all Fijians.
