Fiji’s Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways is shifting its focus toward the active utilization of plant genetic resources, moving beyond primarily conserving these resources. This change was highlighted by Savenaca Cuquma, principal research officer and head of horticulture research, during a presentation at the recent Pacific Agricultural Plant Genetics Resources Network (PAPGREN) meeting in Nadi. Cuquma emphasized that conservation efforts have now been integrated into national planning, marking a significant evolution from the earlier emphasis on conservation and the exchange of geoplasma.
He underscored that the ministry’s key priorities include enhancing food security and nutrition for all Fijians, increasing farmers’ household incomes, and supporting sustainable agricultural practices, including Climate-Smart Agriculture. This renewed focus is also reflected in the recently launched Fiji non-sugar agriculture sector 10-year policy, which aims to incorporate Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA).
The ministry is working hand-in-hand with the Environment Ministry to develop a national Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) policy and framework. Cuquma noted that approximately $400,000 is needed annually for crop projects that utilize PGRFA. Additionally, Fiji has made significant strides in introducing new crop varieties, such as high-yield fruit tubers, designed for improved cultivation.
Cuquma articulated the ministry’s commitment to support other island nations with open pollinated seeds, reinforcing the nation’s investment of around $1 million annually to boost agricultural resilience and productivity across the region.
This proactive approach aligns with broader government initiatives aimed at revitalizing the agricultural sector amidst ongoing challenges such as climate change. In earlier discussions, Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the importance of a robust farming support system that empowers both subsistence and commercial farmers. Such efforts exemplify a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s agriculture sector as it seeks to overcome existing hurdles, ensuring a more sustainable future and economic stability for its rural communities.
