Fiji’s Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Responds to Calls for Resignation

Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku, asserts that calls for his resignation by the Attorney General and the President of the Fiji Law Society are an attempt to encroach on the Judicial Services Commission’s (JSC) duties following a Supreme Court ruling last Friday.

Rabuku stated he has met twice with the JSC this week to devise a plan moving forward. He emphasized the existence of a procedure that must be adhered to, ensuring the Office of the DPP continues to operate seamlessly under his leadership and that his departure, whenever it occurs, is smooth for the staff and everyone involved.

Rabuku clarified that he has not received any directive from the JSC to step down from his acting role. He acknowledged that while the Supreme Court is the highest court in the land and its opinion must be respected, his personal agreement with it is irrelevant. The Acting DPP noted that the court’s opinion was not a mandate for his immediate departure, but rather for the JSC to follow the appropriate processes.
